PAST NEWS NOVEMBER 2011

Remembrance Sunday 13 November - St Andrews Parish Church, Fersfield at 3pm
Bressingham Remembrance Service

In brilliant sunshine almost 40 people joined in the Remembrance Serviceat the newly restored war memorial in Bressingham. The Revd Rob Mellowship led the service and wreaths were laid on behalf of The Royal British Legion by Michael Revell, the 75th New Zealand Squadron RAF by Diana Burroughes and the Parish Council by Rodger Aves. Brenda Oates laid a wreath on behalf of the village church and a representative from Rackhams of Diss also laid a wreath. The names of those who came from our village or were killed here were read by Robert Brooke. We would all like to thank Myrna Hughes for the work she does for the Royal British Legion in organising the Poppy Appeal here.

Bressingham School Rememberance Service
The Rememberance Day Service on 11th November took place at Bressingham War Memorial attended by Bressingham School children, teachers, helpers, parents and residents. As in past years Revd Rob Mellowship conducted the service with the children responding and singing beautifully. Two girls from class 4 - Charlotte Howard and Kristen Grottick - laid the main poppy wreath, whilst some others placed poppy crosses. There was an air of deep respect from even the youngest pupil and all behaved impeccably, especially during the two-minute silence, being commended for this by Rob at the end of the ceremony. It took me back over a decade to when my own children attended the service and brought a lump to my throat.

Fersfield Remembrance Service
Remembrance Sunday was a perfect late Autumn day, and at 3pm the annual Remembrance Service took place at St Andrews, the parish church of Fersfield. It has become traditional for this service to take place during the afternoon, and this year we welcomed the Royal British Legion Standard and the Royal Air Force Association among those taking part. Mr John Summersgill (Royal Air Force) read the lesson, and wreaths were laid by representatives of the Parish and Parochial Church Councils at the Fersfield War Memorial in St. Andrew's Churchyard. Young people played their part, and prayers in church were read by Aidan, Declan and Niamh, who also placed a memorial cross on the grave of Pilot Officer Cecil Wood (son of a former Rector of Fersfield). The proceeds of the collection were given to the Royal British Legion.

PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION
We had some amazing photographs sent in for our competition and Liz Handy had a hard job to decide which she thought should be winners. Read below to see what Liz says .....

"I found judging the competition a really difficult task because of the high standard of photographs entered by everyone and in the end, I decided it was only fair to have two winners - one Adult and one Younger photographer. I want you to know that my choice is very subjective and they are what I like best.

Anyone for pÉtanque?– from Dave Smith
After much raking, shoveling, sieving, barrowing, flattening and weeding, the pétanque pistes are unofficially open. The terrain is undulating with slopes off to some sides so should be quite challenging. A few boules have already been thrown and it seems to play pretty well. I have taken a few pictures on my old phone which I hope to put on the website soon. Lindsay has also some video footage. The surrounding area is still work in progress. Our aim is to introduce the sport to people of all ages and to demonstrate basic techniques and tactics. We hope to have at least one team in next season's Suffolk Coastal League which is played on Sundays during the summer months. If you are interested in playing or have any questions, please contact either myself, Dave T: 01379 641785 or Lindsay on T: 01379 640195.

A big thank you to Allan and Brenda for their support.
