TONY COMPLETES HIS COASTAL RIDE TO HELP HEAT THE CHURCH!

Having received a blessing from the Reverend Rob, I set off at 10am on Saturday 3 September and headed for the coast at Great Yarmouth.  This was completed in good time, thanks to a tail wind which enabled me to achieve my maximum speed of 36.1 mph.  From Yarmouth, the wind turned against me as I followed the coast road out towards Winterton, Happisburgh and on to Cromer, continuing on the coast road to Hunstanton, arriving here, very weary, at 7pm (a total of 130 miles).  I was very happy to be met by my wife Claire who transported me and my bike to a hotel in King's Lynn for a well earned meal and rest.

After a good hearty breakfast, Claire took me back to Hunstanton to continue my ride.  This time I had some welcome support in the form of my brother-in-law, Mark (another mad cyclist!) who joined me on the second leg of the journey.  I was very glad of his support as, by this time, the wind had taken another change of direction and we were cycling against a headwind all across the fens.  To make matters worse, the weather had deteriorated and we had to battle through driving rain from Wisbech, all the way down to Thetford!    At this stage, the legs were weary and it was a case of just keeping our heads down and keep pedalling – to the extent that we didn't even notice Claire drive past us as we approached Garboldisham.

It was an extremely welcome sight to see Fersfield Church with family, friends and wellwishers waiting to greet us as we freewheeled down the hill into Fersfield at 5.06pm, after another 7-plus hours cycling.

I am pleased to say that I raised £450 towards the church heating fund.  I would like to add that it was extremely heartening to receive so much support from the local community.

At the time of writing I have no immediate plans for any further expeditions and the bike has gone into hibernation for the winter, but here are some facts and figures for this ride:

Total distance:       224.11 miles
Average speed:   15.4 mph
Maximum speed:    36.1 mph
Calories burnt:   6003.6
Times legs went round: LOADS!
