PAST NEWS MAY 2013

The garage sale was a great success! by Kirsty Neve

There were 20 households in Bressingham who took part along with a selection of stalls in the school playground plus a refreshments stall serving teas and delicious cakes. Maps of the event were in great demand from keen bargain hunters by 8am!

We raised nearly £200 for the school, I think the sun would have helped but sellers around the village reported a brisk trade and I've had lots of lovely remarks on what a nice community event it was and one lady said how nice it was to see everyone in the village from babies to elderly residents out chatting with each other. We plan to make this a annual event so look out for posters and leaflets advertising it next year. Thinking ahead to next year .... we want to organise open gardens as well so we'd like to start spreading the word so people are aware and have plenty of time to prepare!

ALLOTMENT NEWS

The allotments were given a great boost on Thursday 23rd May with a fantastic donation of 20 tons of compost from Greencomp Limited. This will greatly enhance the soil quality which we know badly needs it. The compost is from the Brown Waste Bin Collection Scheme, so you could say we are getting a little of our own back! Members of the public can obtain this compost by contacting Greencomp Limited on 01953 603984 or by going to their website, to arrange collection on site and price. We can highly recommend its use as a soil improver, or it can be added to shop bought compost to make it go further. We must also give huge thanks to John Orford for his assistance in getting the ground levelled prior to the compost delivery and the Allotment Committee members for the great turn out.

Following a recent visit to the allotments, Parish Councillor, Richard Hewitt said: "The allotments present a very encouraging picture.  There is a clear feeling of shared industry and pride, yet each allotment has an individuality and character of its own.  Growing popularity, fed by the enthusiasm of existing tenants, has led to there being only two vacant allotment plots.  Bressingham and Fersfield may be proud of this pleasant and productive community resource."

Rodger Aves' funeral was held on 14th May in the parish church he worked so hard for. The Rev'd Canon Tony Billett took the service and estimated over 450 people had attended. Inclement weather did not deter anyone and Rodger's coffin entered church through a guard of honour provided by all the churchwardens of the six churches in the Diss Team.
Dick Gibson gave a glowing tribute and told the congregation that Rodger had been Chairman and President of Diss Stockman's Club, and Chairman of Norfolk Livestock Clubs and the Norfolk Holstein Breeders Club. Rodger we were told, had also bred a Holstein cow that was one of only four in the whole country to have ever scored excellent 97 points. Richard Hewitt gave an address on Rodger's work within the villages and also led the prayers.
One of the greatest wishes of the late, Rodger Aves was to see the Bressingham Church porch repaired. As I reported to the Annual Parish Meeting, we have now been given permission from the DAC to replace the lead which was last stolen in July 2011 with zinc, provided South Norfolk Council and English Heritage agree. (I can see this taking a long time!)
To just repair the roof we will have to raise a lot of money, and to complete Rodger's wishes will take even more. Some of this will be available in grants and this is where YOU might be able to help. The PCC is now down to three members, Millie Aves, Molly Walker and myself. It is as much as we can do to keep the services going. We are desperately seeking a 'Friends of Bressingham Church Committee' headed by someone who would be prepared to seek out these grants and fill in the forms. We have had one or two people show an interest, but are you the leader they need? If you think you can help please contact me on 01379 688291 or Ian Cattermole, Chairman of the Parish Council on 01379 688088.
